Mount Rouse

Twenty minutes east of Hamilton, lies the town of Penshurst, home to the extinct volcano Mount Rouse, accessible by vehicle. To the south of the main scoria cone is a deep circular crater with a small lake and shallow crater rimmed with basalt. Past lava flows from Mount Rouse followed shallow, gently sloping river courses, extending at least 60kilometers south. A thin basalt lava flow contained in the scoria cone has been dated approximately 1.8 million years old. The Mount Rouse summit provides panoramic views of the lava plain and surrounding district.

Penshurst Botanic Gardens

The Penshurst Botanic Gardens is relatively new. Officially opened in 1995 its development was centred around a “never failing spring” which in turn created a natural wetland situation. A series of narrow gateways cascade eventually into a larger lake, where a gazebo which nestles on the edge of the water, provides breathtaking views of the Grampians and beyond. The lake is planted with Taxodium distichum or Swamp Cypress which in time will provide a canopy over the footbridge connecting the various waterways. The gardens boast a large collection of Australian, American, European and Asian plantings throughout the wetlands. The botanic gardens link up to the original Penshurst Public Gardens (1889) by a series of pathways. These pathways meander through magnificent oaks and poplars believed to have been planted in the 1920’s.
